Navigating the Three Gates: Returning to Your Center

Lately I’ve been noticing how quickly people lose themselves when life becomes uncomfortable.
One difficult conversation.
One piece of criticism.
One disappointment.
One moment of feeling unseen or misunderstood.
And suddenly we are no longer standing in our center.
Many people unconsciously move into one of two reactions.
Collapse:
“I’m wrong.”
Or resistance:
“They’re wrong.”
I know both places well.
Most of us do.
Collapse can look like overcompensating, people pleasing, spiraling, emotional exhaustion, or quietly abandoning ourselves in order to keep the peace.
Resistance can look like rigidity, blame, emotional armor, defensiveness, and the need to protect identity at all costs.
Neither place is truly freedom.
Both are forms of protection.
One folds inward.
One hardens outward.
Returning to the Compass
In WindWork®, I use the awakening compass as a way of helping people discover where they are actually standing.
The East often holds our stories and mental loops.
The South reveals the emotional weather underneath our reactions.
The West shows us where contraction lives in the body itself.
And the North asks us what wisdom we have gained, and what is now ready to be released.
The Gate of Possibility
The deeper work is not about becoming perfect.
It is about learning how to return to center.
There is a third gate beyond collapse and resistance.
I call it the Gate of Possibility.
Not because life suddenly becomes easy, but because we stop abandoning ourselves every time pressure arrives.
This center place feels quieter. More honest. More spacious.
It is where we begin hearing ourselves again beneath the noise of shame, blame, defensiveness, urgency, and emotional reaction.
Sometimes during journeys I experience this center as a compassionate future self, someone capable of remaining grounded during difficult moments without collapsing or hardening.
Oya’s Sword of Truth
To help us return there, I often call on the wisdom of Oya, the wind of truth and transformation.
Oya carries the sword that cuts through illusion.
Not to punish us.
But to help us see clearly.
Some patterns are not meant to be carried forever.
Some are meant to be laid down, returned to the earth, and transformed into wisdom.
The older I get, the more I realize that real spiritual growth is not about becoming untouchable.
It is about becoming honest enough to remain human while staying connected to our deeper center.
